Comprehensive, Long-Term Data Project - Gambling Treatment Data Collection and Analysis for Ministry of Health
PSAL manages national data collection, analysis, and reporting for the New Zealand gambling treatment sector on behalf of the Ministry of Health. The CLIC data system includes MS Access databases nationwide, a centralised MS SQL data collection tool, and a variety of data quality and analysis systems built using the open source database MySQL and the powerful Python scripting language. The reporting systems include automated emailing of MS Excel spreadsheets.
PSAL has been involved in this project since 1997 (prior to the Ministry contracted by the Problem Gambling Committee). PSAL developed the CLIC databases in 2002 and has been responsible for subsequent maintenance and redevelopment. In the past, PSAL co-authored the National Statistics reports, and produced data-related documentation for the sector.

PSAL developed the SODA (Supervision On-line Database Application) system. SODA is an online database used by over 50 clinical supervisors from Invercargill to Whangarei, and by ACC managers across the country.
The benefits of making SODA an online system have been considerable and include:
- Secured data entry by staff using any modern browser (e.g. Firefox, Safari, Opera, and Internet Explorer)
- Always up-to-date reporting and invoicing
- Instant upgrades without having to manage over 80 individual installations
- Built-in documentation
- Scalable - easy to grow the system as the users increase (without any costly or complicated license implications)

NZ Mental Health Classification And Outcomes Study
While Casemix Information Manager for Mental Health Services (Waitemata DHB), Grant Paton-Simpson was responsible for developing the Resource Allocation Tool, an outcomes reporting tool, and an NHI encryption tool for national use. To provide this functionality, including client photo IDs, and detailed privacy tracking, PSAL was commissioned to create MethData. -
OMA (Outpatient Medication Audit)
PSAL created a database for Waitemata DHB's Clinical Research and Resource Centre. Services provided included data cleaning, data migration, database development, and data analysis. -
AURDA Interactive Reporting
PSAL created the AURDA Reporting Tool to enable seven District Health Boards to better understand their costs and client outcomes. PSAL also cleaned and documented the underlying dataset for the Ministry of Health (NZ Health Information Service). -
Methadone Outcomes Measurement
Grant Paton-Simpson, while Senior Researcher at CIRU (Clinical Information and Research Unit), co-developed a methadone assessment system with psychologist Stuart MacKinnon. -
